'DEEWANGI” OF ANNES/ ANNETS NITE CELEBRATIONS!!!

The summer holidays had been a break in routine for children and parents - no rush to make breakfast or to gulp breakfast, no reminders to complete school work and hard earned rest for mothers’ vocal chords. It was in this relaxed atmosphere that the Downtown team celebrated the Annes & Annets Nite. The evening was meticulously planned by Rtne. Lucy as a total fun show. The theme of the evening was “deewangi” – the word means a heady mix of love and madness. In many ways, that has been the underlying weave of the year and Downtown’s commitment to our families and Rotary. We have always put up our hands together and enjoyed every moment. And the Nite was a re-enforcement of the same - every family, without exception was on stage, and well past midnight! The mood of the meeting was set with PP Vinu Verghese delivering the Rotary Information talk in his inimitable style. After the formal meeting which included an update on the community service projects, induction of new members by Asst. Governor Dr. Ajaykumar, ever-punctual release of Lifewatch and a vote of thanks by Club Service Director Rtn. Benny Zachariah, President Madhav handed over the stage to the Annes & Annets. First Lady Rtne. Sujata chaired the brief meeting and Rtne. Rekha thanked everyone for their active participation.
The evening swung into action with a dazzling group dance by Rtnes. Anne, Deepa, Durga and Annets Ann, Lakshmi & Nimisha. The beautifully choreographed dance with eye-catching costumes was a perfect start to the celebrations.
Then came the children’s troupe with a fashion guide to Kerala’s history starting from the princely state of Travancore to today’s trendy world. Every Annet including the youngest at one-and-half years walked the ramp accompanied with the engrossing narrative of Rtne. Anju delivered by Rtne. Durga.
The hallmark of every Annes Nite at Downtown had been the Annes’ group dance which has traversed many Indian states and forms. This year was no different ; with Rtne. Aji’s hardwork, she and the team of Rtnes. Kala, Mary, Dr.Nandini, Prasanna, Preeja, Susie, and Rtn. Sreevidya performed a folk dance from the East to clockwork perfection.
The audience was treated to melodious singing by Annets Joseph, Anand and Lakshmy and all the singers among the elders. Next to set our heartbeats racing was a foot-tapping dance number choreographed and performed by Annets Ann, Nimisha and Radhika to a medley of songs. In between, Annet Atul thoroughly enjoyed them swirling around him.
The nite was far from over, the piece de resistance was the theme dance or team dance conceived by Annet Arjun where “all hot girls” and “all cool boys” of Downtown danced in abandon to King Khan’s hit number “Deewangi”. Annets Adarsh, Atul, Kevin, Mihir and Rishi led the floor and were followed in turn by every Downtown couple who shone brighter than the stars in the film.
The evening would not have fructified without the warm hospitality of Rtne. Anju and Rtn. Anil Nair who opened their home to Downtown participants (read the whole club) eager to rehearse.

Regional Fellowship Meet 08 – ‘Converge’
Eventhough it was the day after the high voltage Anns Nite, we made our presence felt at the Regional Fellowship meet at Highway Gardens on the 31stMay.

Downtown take District Assembly by storm!

All eyes were on the big 40-seater A/c bus when it rolled into the District Assembly venue at Coimbatore! The only bus to be spotted at this year’s Assembly, Downtown surprised all by its sheer attendance and the presence of so many Anns and Annets. It was yet again a Downtown merry trip! Kudos to the organizers of the Assembly too for the festive atmosphere they created as well as the mighty impressive food courts.

Closed Meeting

Club Assembly on May 16th
The weekly meeting after the Board meeting on 14th had a very good attendance. It was just the day before all the members had assembled for the wedding of Annet Supriya Krishnan and it did not keep the members away from this closed meeting. Secretary read the minutes of the Board decisions and discussions. President explained all the salient points in detail for those members who were not present in the Board. Later on he went on to update the members on the activities during the week and about the forthcoming events. The attraction of the meeting was the talk by IPP John George who was fresh from his US tour. His ‘Las Vegas Diary’ was very interesting and informative to all those present. IPP in his inimitable style was showcasing only the tip of the ice-berg and that raised the curiosity of the members further about his ‘adventures’! The meeting then raised a toast and wished Bon Voyage to PP ATchayan who is embarking on his 6 months’ tour of the USA. After the birthday and anniversary announcements and vote of thanks by the Secretary, President adjourned the meeting for fellowship and dinner.

Guest of the night was none other than our own GGR – Rtn. Reghu Ramachandran. It was a GGR’s visit of a different style! The meeting started off as scheduled with a packed
audience of Anns and Annets as well. Attendance like this would have surely given the GGR lots to cherish. Rotary Information talk of the week was delivered for the first time by a Rotary Anne – Dr. Nandini Nair. She did it with élan and explained in her own unique way how she and her husband got sucked into the Rotary system. Her talk motivated the younger members on how one should enjoy being a part of the Rotary family and at the same time gain the satisfaction of serving the community. Handing over of the Rs. 2.0 lakhs DD for the Kadamakkudy pipeline, Munnar Medical Camp and Herbal plant promotion, 1st Chintan Baitak of Pres-elect Sebastian, finalisation of the new Board, discussions on the Govt.

Family Picnic & Chintan Baitak 2008-09
This mini family picnic had all the ingredients of a pot boiler! Starting from the way our Preselect organised the trip in the absence of our President in town during the week, to getting all the families together, to getting rooms for each of those who were there at Wild Elephant resort, to watching the Idea Star Singer finals, to having a real Chintan Baitak in a candle-lit ambience, to juggling for space in an open air tent, to catching up with each other snoring, to what not!! The crowd could not have asked for more. Those who missed out on joining the picnic had a great loss, of not being part of the abundant fun and frolic that the gang went through. Otherwise how can one imagine going for fishing and boating in the wilderness of the hilly terrain of Munnar?! Trekking, the rejuvenating bath under the waterfalls, guinea chasing and a never-ending night of naturally chilled spirits! Here are a few glimpse of the real hungama!

President in his address briefed the members about the activities during the week and also gave away a talk on 'success'. He narrated the excerpts of a speech by Subroto Bagchi, Chief Operating Officer, MindTree Consulting India. Youth Festival 2008 – Who could do it better!!
While the nation celebrated its 59thRepublic Day, the troop from Downtown gathered at the appointed hour at TocH School Auditorium to trigger the gala parade of talents and their teamwork. The show by the youngsters was as mesmerising as any of the tableaus on the Parade grounds in Delhi that day. The eminent panel of judges selected 68 prizewinners and each event was co-ordinated with clockwork precision by the ever-smiling team of Annes of Downtown. The Rotarians from Downtown were present in full strength, backing up their Annes at the venue.
The events of music, dance, recitation and painting and sketching events drew the maximum number of participants, while the team events, particularly the quiz, attracted the most audience participation. The tiny-tots stole everyone’s hearts with their own set of events.
The day-long competitions drew to a close in the evening and the gala entertainment and awardnite took over at the scenic Gymkhana lawns. The tightly fought Rotary Kalapratibha title for outstanding individual performance went to Rithika Rajan, daughter of Rtn. President K. S. Rajan and Rtne. Shobha Rajan of RC Cochin Central. A gifted artist, Rithika won gold in both classical and freestyle dance forms and added silver for Recitation - Malayalam. Two other closest contenders for the title were Pavithra Mohan, daughter of Rtn. President Mohan K. S. of RC Cochin South and Dyuthi Kurian, daughter of Rtn. Dale Kurian of RC Cochin Global. Kalaprathibha walked away with an exquisitely designed memento and a gift hamper containing airtickets, family vacation packages at various resorts among other gifts. All the winners bagged beautifully crafted gold and solver medals along with attractive gift hampers which contains goodies ranging from gift vouchers worth Rs. 1,500/- to Titan watches to T-shirts and coffee mugs.
The team from Minnale performed foot-tapping numbers interspersed with humourous skits. More entertainment was in store with a Josco sponsored jewellery fashion show by leading models. The attractive compere for the evening was the upcoming star, Aiswarya. Celebrations and festivities lasted well past midnight.

Double Wicket

Thevara SH ground, January 20: It was yet another cricket tournament and there again was Downtown in full form presenting its A & B teams! The venue was the picturesque Sacred Hearts ground by the backwaters and the event was the Super Sixer tournament organised by RC Cochin Midtown. The B team lead by Rtn. editor Abey Varkey and Rtn. Santosh went down fighting in the first round itself against a much superior and ‘young’ opposition.

But the true event was yet to unfold. Another quarter final match and Downtown A team was playing with full glory with Rtn. Dr. Sunil Mathai and Secretary Rtn. Paul Raj comprehensively outplaying the opponents. 15 runs to win and Dr. Sunil had already hit 3 huge sixers and virtually pocketed the match. Next ball he tries to defend as there was no need of any more runs and the need was to just occupy the crease for another few balls. The inside edge shot up and hit his cheek, by God’s grace just below his right eye – the result, a deep cut bleeding profusely. Our ‘strong man’ in his unbeatable style wanted to
continue playing but was coerced by others to be taken to his own den, the Medical Trust Hospital. At the end of the one hour surgery by the plastic surgeon, our hero was left with 3 layers of stitches on his face, but that did not stop him from coming back to the ground to a standing ovation from the other players and galleries. While we thank our stars and God Almighty for saving what could have been a major injury, three cheers to the ever-sportive Rtn. Dr. Sunil and his supportive Ann Aji for tiding over this accident in their own unique style.

Weekly meeting on 12th January 2008

This was only the second time this year that we were meeting at a different venue for our family meeting. After the refreshing experience at PP Rtn. Binesh’s Club House at Kakkanad, President seems to have invented an innovative way to make our family get-togethers even more exciting. This time the venue was the poolside lawns at Rtn. BennyZach’s picturesque villa at Maradu. Rtn. Benny and Rtne. Lucy and Annets Nims and Zach had done everything to make this New Year & Xmas celebrations a real memorable one.

The formal meeting started off with the President at the chair and Rtn. M.A. Sebastian officiating the Secretary’s job as Rtn. Paul got late in the traffic snarl in the city. Customary Rotary information talk was by none other than the IPP Rtn. John George. He candidly talked about the events that lead to his acquaintance with the Rotary movement and the subsequent changes that happened to him personally through Rotary. Many of us could well relate ourselves to what the IPP narrated. President Rtn. Madhav then briefed the members and families of the activities during the past one month. A long list indeed for such a short span of time - the club indeed is doing yeomen service on the community service front and excelling as always on the other avenues. President then invited Youth Festival Chairman Rtn. Benny to update on the preparations on the Youth Festival and he in turn appealed to all members to get involved fully in making the event a great success. PP Rtn. Giri Menon made an invitation announcement about his son Annet Keshav’s forthcoming wedding. Birthday felicitations and announcements gave way to an impressive vote of thanks by Secretary-in-charge Sebastian. The formal part of the meeting ended and what followed was a musical treat by a rich orchestra blended with Hindi favourites of our inhouse nightingales Rtne. Nandini and Susy, and a sumptuous dinner spiced up with ‘nadan Kallu’ and ‘Kaada mutta’ snacks.

Team Downtown goes down fighting in ‘Super Sixer’!
Jan 6:T here was no evidence at all of the tight struggle that Capt. RC Greater Cochin and Metropolis were the opponents, and the members lead by Captain and ably supported by Rtns. Prince, Paul Raj, Antony, Anil and our President gave a good fight against the well-practiced rivals. While Paul and Prince shone with the bat, Antony and Anil showed their skills with the cherry. RYLA 2007 A dream come true for Downtown!
When the tall pedestal lamp was ceremoniously lit on the 28th December at Rajagiri College Auditorium it was the auspicious launch of our first ever RYLA being organized. The fact that all the participants of our RYLA were from the economically backward section of the society and being financially supported by Rajagiri added more significance to our program. A befitting RYLA matching the true ideals of Rotary! President in his address enlightened the children on the importance of Rotary and how the Rotary leaders shared their talents and resources to meet the needs of the community. President-elect M.A. Sebastian in his true style motivated the students on their career goals and how they should shape their objectives in life. The 3-day camp also saw our Annes Annie Sebastian and First Lady Sujata taking sessions on Self Motivation and Leadership Skills respectively. President gave away the awards and certificates to the participants during the valedictory ceremony held on Sunday 30th December.

SALSA – The inimitable Downtown way!
December 1 & 2: This week-end was different for over 22 Downtown couples. In one of the most exciting and innovative club service activities of the club, ballroom dance training was conducted exclusively for our families. Taking a leaf out of the contemporary trends when Salsa and Ballroom dance forms are fast becoming a craze for the party-goers it was a timely effort, just in time for the Christmas and New Year season. Rtn. Michael and his Rtne. Sini made this unique event possible by roping in two professional Salsa teachers to train the ever-sportive Downtown gang. The success of the program was unmatched, with a packed banquet hall at Wyte Fort brimming with couples ranging from ATchayan and Annamma Aunty to Vivek & Durga swaying to the tunes of the Salsa song. Now it’s time to wait for dance parties….. to test our dancing skills!

Special Speaker Meeting : 14th December 2007

The 20th weekly meeting of the year was also the 2nd Special Meeting of the year, where Anns and Annets were also invited to a Guest Speaker meeting. The meeting was special, as it had Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram as the guest speaker and he was giving a practical demonstration of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) which was to be seen by our Anns and grown-up Annets, had it to be of any use in real life.

Meeting started at 8:30 pm and the President invited Inner Wheel Club of Cochin President Padmaja Menon, who had come in as a guest, to share the dais. The week’s Rotary Information talk was delivered by Rtn. Dr. Sunil Mathai, and he stressed upon the importance of families’ role in Rotary, a message that was well received by all.
President Rtn. Madhav Chandran updated on the activities during the past week and informed the members about the confirmation of the beneficiaries’ list of Rain-water harvesting and Sanitation project at Kadamakkudy. He also released the first brochure of the mega event - Youth Festival 2008. He informed the members about the first RYLA to be conducted by the club on 28-30th December at Rajagiri College.

Inner Wheel Club of Cochin President Padmaja spoke about the possibilities of forming an Inner Wheel Club of Downtown and explained the advantages of having such an outfit for our Anns. Her speech was inspirational to the Anns who were present in large numbers at the meeting.
Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram in his highly involved and effective presentation explained the various ways of heart and lungs resuscitation. Members and families were so engrossed that a stoic silence prevailed even after the 30 mts. speech by the doc. On behalf of the Club, President thanked Dr. Jose and his Heart Care Foundation for the useful session and promised all possible support to the Foundation.

Jt. Secretary Rtn. Vivek Govind made birthdays and formal announcements of the week before he delivered the vote of thanks. Rtne. Downtown lifts Bobby Hormis Memorial ever-rolling trophy!
It was yet again Downtown all the way!! Close on heels of the “Anthakshari 2007” of RC Greater Cochin,“Sruthilayam 2007” organised by RC Midtown turned out to be a true cultural extravaganza as promised by the organizers. But the night once again belonged to Downtown, as we excelled in every event, and celebrations reached a peak with our President leading the jubilant team to lift the championship Bobby Hormis Memorial Trophy. The scintillating Group Dance of Rtnes. Anne Thomas, Durga Govind, Sujata Madhav, Deepa Santosh & Annets Nimisha Zachariah & Ann Thomas won the first place with their well choreographed and lively erformance. Adding to the glory was the other first prize for the Group Song team of President himself, Rtns. Thomas Joseph, and Benny Zachariah and Rtnes. Dr. Nandini Nair, Major Susie Paul, Molly Thomas & Durga Govind, with their melodious rendering of a relatively-lesser known song interspersed with pieces of classical notes. Rtne. Major Susie Paul won the third place in Solo Song event with her foot-tapping Asha Bhonsle number which was hard to distinguish from the original. The music quiz team of Rtnes. Dr. Nandini Nair and Mary Jason sang through to the final round where they were placed fourth. The cheering and supportive family crowd from Downtown ensured the best participating club award for themselves. Lady Luck was also shining on Downtowners as Rtne. Molly Thomas won the bumper prize of home theater in the lucky draw and Rtn. Dr. Mohan Nair too won another lucky prize. So when IPDG Baby Joseph handed over the Bobby Hormis Memorial Championship Trophy to a jubilant team lead by our President it was the culmination of a well orchestrated team work in the true family spirits unique of Downtown! Hip hip hurray! Downtown has arrived!!

It’s celebrations time at Yacht Club!
One month and two inter-club events – Anthakshari and Sruthilayam! Different venues, different organizers; but the winner remained the same at both the shows – Team Downtown! Yes, November was an extra-ordinary month for us. When President Madhav Chandran & Secretary Paul Raj decided to host a gala dinner for the families at the picturesque lawns of the Yacht Club on Sunday, November 25, 2007, it was a well-deserved celebration of sheer team work and family spirits. The championship is not as important as the preparation for it. Even if they had not won, the Downtown team had achieved their goal of working seamlessly as a dream team and proving to be the envy of many. What brings together a group of grown-ups to sing & dance after a hectic day at work?! And what brings others who are not even participating to spend equal amount of time in designing costumes or hosting the participants in their homes or just being the needed critics. Well, one good reason is that they are all Downtowners with the common goal of doing their club proud. Organising team events hold many lessons - how the weakest link is the strength of the chain, the realisation that individual performance will fade out without coaching others to reach the expected level, why it is important to recognize your individual limitation and work on it, and most importantly how movements in tandem are eye-catching while notes out of beat are jarring to the ear.The entire Downtown family enjoyed an evening of music & fellowship where President & Secretary thanked each member, contestant & supporter with special mention of the Club Service Director Benny Zachariah & his Anne Lucy Zachariah who had left no stone unturned to ensure the practice sessions went off without a hitch. Kudos to the winners, and of course, thank you President and Secretary for a memorable treat! Long live our friendship, fellowship and long live the Downtown’s winning ways!!

Anthakshari 2007: Downtown flag flying high!
Nov 3: It was a night that was meant for celebrations! The huge crowd of Downtown families had enough reasons to celebrate. In a fiercely contested event, Team Downtown won the 'Anthakshari' contest conducted by RC Greater Cochin, beating all the other 10 particpating clubs. Our team spearheaded by our President himself, alongwith our nightingale Annes Dr. Nandini and Major Susie comprehensively defeated the erstwhile winning clubs of Metropolis, Midtown, International & the likes in the thrilling finals that held the audience spellbound. This is the first time that our club is winning the first prize in the Anthakshari contest. In the B team category our team of Anns Mary Jaison, Durga Veivek and Annet Achyut Padmaraj won the thrid prize and that added to the joy. Three cheers to the winners! We are proud of you!!

Joint Family Meeting with RC Cochin East
November 17, 2007
Our first joint family meeting with another sister club in the region happened on Saturday 17th November 2007. The hosts were members and families of Rotary Club of Cochin East and the event was arranged as a DJ nite. Our members turned up in large numbers and heartily reciprocated the warmth shown by the Eastites. The meeting started off with the Cochin East President Rtn. Meena Viswanathan welcoming the gathering and expressing her pleasure over having the Downtown families with them. President Rtn. R. Madhav Chandran thanked the host club for making all arrangements for the family meet and conveyed his satisfaction of having the first joint meeting with RC Cochin East itself as was done in the earlier years. Official DJs of the night, Rtns. Pradeep Narayan and Manoj, played the music quite skillfully spicing it up with western as well as popular Bollywood numbers with elan, and had the crowd shaking their legs on the dance floor. It was an enjoyable evening with both the clubs extending their fellowship and easily mingling with each other. The event ended with both the Presidents thanking the gathering and acknowledging the efforts put in by the DJs and the organisers of the night.

Family Picnic on 20th October
The much-awaited picnic to Kovalam beach was on last 20th. It was a grey morning and quite overcast. The weather translated into our moods when we realized that contrary to the confirmations, there were only few families for the picnic. Accustomed as I was to being a part of a large boisterous group, this I thought would turn out to be a damp squid.
We set out after a sumptuous breakfast in a convoy of two cars and tempo traveler. Special mention must be made of Rtn. Unni and Rtne. Sindhu, they when informed of the low turnout, sportingly agreed to join us straight from their beds. We had fun in the van and after a quick lunch at Trivandrum proceeded to Kovalam Samudra. The long haul from here to Kovalam was felt by many on their creaking knees and throbbing backs. But the kids were all fired up and raring for a dip in the sea. Kids had fun being tossed around by not so gentle waves and we quickly lured them into the pool.
Rtne. Sujatha and Rtne. Lucy saw to it that the picnic went off without a hitch. Hidden qualities of our Rotarians came to fore, with Rtn. Antony and Rtn. Binesh proving them to be excellent green grocers. The kids had a blast and enjoyed every moment spend there.
Although the spirit was low, literally and figuratively, since most of the high-spirited Rotarians were missing, everyone pitched in their might to make the picnic lively.

Medical Checkup for Rotarians & families: Inaugurated on 7 th October
Sunday, 7th October saw the dawn of a new initiative in Rotary. Rotarians who are used to organising Medical Camps for the needy around them, saw themselves being examined to evaluate their own health conditions. The location was Hotel Wyte Fort and the scene was the 'Rotary Family Health' project where all the Rotarians and family members of our Club went through numerous medical investigations ranging from blood tests, ECG, blood pressure, cholestrol, kidney functionality, ENT, dental & lungs test and a thorough eye checkup. All the required equipments were arranged in the friendly ambience of the hotel and everyone went through the tests in a merry and casual manner instead of the usual hospital tensions. PDG Babu Joseph inaugurated this unique pet project of our DG Narayanaswamy at 7:30 am, and imagine Rotarians queuing up to test blood with an empty stomach! The disciplinarian eyes of project Chairman Dr. Sasikumar kept a close watch on the progress of each test. Our veteran doctor members lead by Dr. Mohan Nair, Dr. Ramesh Nair, Dr. Mathews and Dr. Saju Raju lead the investigations with the able support of the paramedical teams from EI Labs and Giridhar Eye Institute. At the end of the program, Anns were a satisfied lot for having got their Rotary heros undergo these tests - many of them for the first time in their lives! The project summed up the true meanings of both the RI theme as well as our Club theme for the year - "Rotary Shares" & "Sharing is Caring"!
