1997 is a year of historic importance to Rotary Club of Cochin Downtown. Sometime during the middle of this year, 15 like-minded gentlemen decided to form a new club. In order to keep the spirit intact, they used to meet at Lotus Club and several other venues every Friday. Their sense of unity and determination to form a new club saw more members-to-be joining in. By the end of 1997, the group strength had grown to around 25.
Horizon brightened up for the team when Rtn. Sunil Zachariah took over as the District Governor in 1998-99. After a great amount of persuasion, Rtn. PP K. Raveendran was nominated as the GSR. Thereafter, things started moving very fast. Rotary Club of Cochin Harbour came forward as a sponsor club. Based on the recommendation of the GSR, and with the immense blessings of the then District Governor, this never-say-die group received the charter on 17th March 1999 – to form the Rotary Club of Cochin Downtown.
The Charter President was Rtn. George Antony and Secretary, Binesh Sukumar. The weekly meetings were being held at Hotel ATS Wellingdon Island for quite sometime, and the venue later shifted to Hotel Wyte Fort. Rotary Club of Cochin Downtown is a dinner club and meets every Friday at 8:00 p.m. Over the years Cochin Downtown is unique for its friendly family atmosphere and the cheer and spirits that flow within. The thread of unity and fellowship that binds the members together since 1997, is growing in strength by the passing years.
