What better way to celebrate the spirits of our country's Independence than to be in the company of those innocent children who are just a bit unfortunate than many of us! The smiles on the faces of these kids filled the hearts of all those present there. The occasion also marked the distribution of the Insurance Policies donated by our Club for the students of the school.

Downtown spends Christmas with the inmates of 'House of Providence'

This year Rotarians at Cochin Downtown decided to greet Christmas with a difference. Yet to recover from the shock of the sudden demise of dear Rtn. Krishnan, the befitting way to spend Xmas was to help the older generation at the 'House of Providence' celebrate the holy event. Entire team of Rotarians and their families assembled at the 'House of Providence' and witnessed the celebrations of the inmates there and shared the Xmas cake and dinner with them.

It was a moment of shock and endless grief not only for the Ann and Annets of our beloved Rtn. K.V.G. Krishnan, but also for the entire family of Cochin Downtown when fate snatched him away from our midst on 11th December. While we stand in unison in sharing the sorrow with Ann Smita and Annets Supriya and Mallika, we pray Almight to give them strength and courage to face the changed situation.

'Smile of a Child' : Financial assistance given to first batch of children

Challenged are those who get bitten by the cruel pangs of fate at such a tender age - children affected with the deadly disease, Cancer. Bringing smiles to the faces of these bravehearts who are fighting against the will of fate, was the thought that drove Downtownarians to conceive the wonderful project, 'Smile of a Child'. The Family Meet of the first month of 2004 was the venue for the first batch of those children to receive financial assistance from Rotary Downtown. The priceless smiles that bloomed on their faces filled many a hearts and reinforced the spirit of Rotary that made us do whatever our bit for those little ones. Kudos to the entire family of Downtown, and a special mention to our dear member and senior oncologist Dr. Mohan Nair for making this dream come true.

Rotary Football tournament - Downtown goes down fighting

After the shuttle badminton tournament, it was the turn for football to bring the best out of Downtown's fast footed sportsmen lead by the ubiquitous Rtn. Dr. Sunil Mathai. League rounds saw Downtown kicking RC Cochin Central out of the tournament in a match that witnessed the acrobatic summersaults of Rtn. Binesh, a stunning Hand-of-God performance by Rtn. Padmaraj, a scintillating header by Rtn. Antony and a fool-proof net maintained by the goal-keeper Rtn. Noushad. Even while going down fighting against Runners-up RC Cochin in the Quarter Final match after holding them goaless till the very last minutes, we ensured that our presence was felt as it was always felt in any of the Rotary competitions.

Welcome aboard - Rtn. Sunil Nambiar!

This energetic mediaman's entry into the Downtown family was long overdue, and the family meeting of January 2004 saw him taking the plunge into the world of Rotary with his gracious Ann Sajini.

Foundation stone laid for Shilpa's physiotherapy room

It was on Independence Day 2003 that the entire families at Downtown descended on Shilpa School for Handicapped Children at Palluruthy, and declared our wholehearted support to this project. This Republic Day we went another step ahead and laid the foundation stone for the Physiotherapy room to be built by us at the school for these challenged children. Taken as a part of the 'Smile of a Child' project, this was another gesture by us to Dr. Hari and Dr. Pramila, the pillars of strength at Shilpa, to say "we are with you".

Smiles of these Children - what more do you want in return!

Our Anns supported the event by performing a scintillating Dandiya dance which was a feast for the eyes and heart of everyone present.

Downtown Board Meetings - Ideas galore

Meetings of the Director Board at Downtown are always forums for plenty of ideas and thoughts thrown in by the Directors on their respective avenues of services. Here is a glimpse of one of those meetings.

Governor dedicates Physiotherapy Centre for Shilpa School

It was a moment of pride and satisfaction to all at Downtown when our District Governor Rtn. PHF. L. Rajamani dedicated the physiotherapy room constructed by our club for the students of the Shilpa School at Palluruthy. Our Governor won the hearts of those innocent children and their parents with his affectionate and sincere words and gestures towards them during the occasion.

Governor's Day-out with Probus Members

Amidst his hectic schedule visiting many a project sites, District Governor Rtn. PHF. L. Rajamani found time to pay a visit to the one and only Probus Club of the District - Probus Club at Moolampally. Probus Club members were overjoyed with his visit that they performed a series of variety entertainment with unmatched spirits and vigour forgetting their old age. Members thanked Downtown for relentlessly supporting the club in its existence and expressed their gratitude in making their dream picnic come true during the year.

First phase of Sneha Gramam inaugurated

During his official visit to our club, District Governor Rtn. PHF. L. Rajamani inaugurated the first phase of Sneha Gramam - our monumental Centennial project. Witnessed by the entire population of Cheriya Kadamakkudy island village, DG dedicated the first rain-water harvesting unit constructed by our club as part of our Centennial project. Expressing their gratitude, the villagers showered praises on the good work done for them by Downtownarians and the children of the village performed variety entertainment to please the chief guest.

Welcome aboard - Rtn. Vijay Cherian & Rtn. Vivek Govind

Governor's official visit to our club marked the entry of two stars into our Downtown family - Rtn. Vijay and Rtn. Vivek. Both of them backed by their illustrious career paths and equally illustrious Anns will definitely feel at home with the Downtown gang. Welcome home - Rtn. Vijay &  Rtnne. Sunita and Rtn. Vivek & Rtnne. Ganga.

Hats off to the new PHFs of the Club

The visit of the District Governor saw an addition to the tally of the Paul Harris Fellows in our club. 2 new PHFs were added with President Rtn. B.T. Philip and PP Rtn. Thomas Joseph joining the elite club. Congrats PHFs, and let's look forward to more of such magnanimous gestures from everyone around.

Smita Krishnan - our first Honorary member

In a touching and highly emotional moment, Asst. Governor, and our own PP, Dr. Benny Paul placed the Rotary lapel pin on Smitha Krishnan, making her our first honorary member of the club. RI President's special theme of  'Family of Rotary' was being adopted by us wholeheartedly, when we sincerely and genuinely welcomed the bereaved family of our dear Rtn. Krishnan back into our midst.

Governor's Official Visit & Charter Nite Celebrations

Come March, and it's time for celebration at Downtown. The Charter Anniversary together with the District Governor's official visit to the club are celebrated as the annual festival at Downtown. This year was no exception with a colorful function with officials from sister clubs in the city and guests present.  District Governor Rtn. PHF. L. Rajamani made his visit a very memorable one by impressing upon all members with his envious style of simplicity and positiveness. Charter Nite celebrations saw the founder members assembling once again to cut the ceremonial anniversary cake amidst the thumping of the gathering. Here are a few glimpses of the event:

'Smile of Child' brings more smiles

Smile of a Child project brought more smiles to those less fortunate children affected with cancer. In its second phase, during the visit of the District Governor, 5 more children were given financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 50,000 to help them fight the dreaded disease and to support them in their rehabilitation. When we see those faint smiles on the faces of those children, we believe - these are a few moments in life when we feel really satisfied with something worthwhile that we have done.

Chintan Baithak II - yet again at Munnar

After spending a hectic time making the Governor's visit a grand success, the entire Director Board members decided to hit the Tall Trees Resort at Munnar once again this year for a brainstorming cum unwinding session - Chintan Baithak II. Not only did the Baithak produce innovative new project ideas, it also did see some moments of special ways of unwinding by the members. Here are a few snapshots:

The aesthetically designed (by our own Rtn. Architect Binesh Sukumar) dustbins in the shape of rustic wooden tree trunks were formally dedicated to the public by GCDA Chairman Prof. Antony Cyriac. The next phase of this project will soon see park-chairs being installed along the Marine Drive to make it more beautiful and attractive to tourists. Keep waiting Kochiites!
